Michelin on IMAX

Project Overview

This project involved the production of a full 3D computer-generated (CG) video series, divided into three parts with a total duration of approximately 5 minutes. The clips were structured as follows:

  • Prelude (Code M) – An opening sequence shown before the main conference begins.

  • Interlude (Code T) – A transitional video leading into the TirePlus group meeting.

  • Postlude – A closing sequence that wraps up the entire event.

Designed specifically for screening in an IMAX theatre setting, the project required high-quality visuals and precise storytelling. The total production timeline was 30 calendar days.

Project Challenges

  • High Volume of 3D Elements: Each clip contained numerous 3D models, props, and animated elements, adding complexity to the production pipeline.

  • Creative Demands: Every scene had to convey a specific mood and tone while maintaining a visually engaging sequence flow to leave a strong impression on the audience.

  • Strict Time Constraints: The limited 30-day work period required efficient resource allocation and fast decision-making.

  • Client Approvals: Many elements were considered key visuals and required multiple rounds of confirmation with the client, which added pressure to the timeline.

  • Visual Quality Expectations: Delivering a high level of realism and visual impact suitable for the immersive IMAX format was a critical requirement.

  • Technical issue when mirroring computer screen to IMAX display: This is the first time, we got an opportunity to work with IMAX Technology. Specific visual elements—such as scenes with white tones or low contrast—risked losing detail when projected on an IMAX screen, necessitating careful adjustment during production.

  • Complex Render Scenes: Some 3D scenes involved intricate animation and lighting, resulting in longer rendering times and requiring detailed planning to manage rendering queues and resource availability.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Early Alignment on Key Elements: Establishing faster client approval processes or confirming design directions earlier could reduce production bottlenecks.

  • IMAX-Focused Visual Guidelines: Developing a visual checklist specifically tailored for IMAX projection (e.g., contrast thresholds, color brightness) would help mitigate detail loss.

  • Rendering Pipeline Optimization: Utilizing more efficient render management tools or pre-allocating rendering resources for complex scenes would improve delivery reliability.

  • Enhanced Time Buffering: Allocating additional time for iterative creative feedback, especially on visually critical elements, would improve overall workflow fluidity.
